Trenching Works – Dust Control

Trenching can be the most hazardous work on a construction site

Trenching poses a range of safety hazards ranging from exposure to airborne contaminants to risk of engulfment due to cave-ins, falls, falling loads and hitting utility lines.  Employees working in excavation and trenching operations are continually exposed to airborne contaminants such as; Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) due to work activities such as sifting sand; and crushing, grinding, and moving rocks that may disturb silica particles.

Exposure Standards

  • Health and Safety – Managing Work Health and Safety may initially cost money and time to implement safe practices and install the appropriate safety equipment. However, not taking action can result in prosecution, fines and loss of skilled staff.  Fines vary between $5000 – $70,000 per day for unsafe practices. You can find out current regulations at Safe Work Australia
  • Mobile dust collection equipment is the most suitable method to safeguard the health of workers at risk of exposure to airborne contaminants such as; Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS). Grydale mobile dust collectors also have a certified filtration efficiency that adheres to current regulatory standards.
  • Operational Efficiencies – managing dust on construction sites can speed up operations by improving visibility and reducing wear and tear on machines.

Excavation Equipment

Large chain trenchers or wheel trenchers are a highly effective group of excavation equipment, however, this equipment also produces high volumes of dust that needs to be controlled to protect the health and safety of workers and to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment.

Grydale mobile dust collectors have been engineered to manage dust at the source of creation. Flexible ducting is used to extract dust before it is allowed to escape into the surrounding atmosphere .

Our experienced team are able to advise the type and size of the dust collector to best suit your applications and surrounding conditions.

Track Mounted Dust Collectors

Track mounted units are remote controlled so workers can be located at a safe distance while operating machinery. These units can move in unison with dust generating machinery to remove dust at the source, meaning, large, highly efficient, excavation equipment can be used in environments where they were previously restricted, such as underground, close to communities or in eco-sensitive environments.

Grydale design and manufacture a complete range of internationally patented, mobile industrial dust collection equipment. The JMS M-Series is an extensive range of mobile dust collectors with air volumes from 6m3/s (12,000 CFM) to 60m3/s (125,000 CFM).  These units are available for short, medium and long-term rental or purchase.

JMS M-Series. Key Features.

Grydale JMS M-Series mobile dust collectors are complete dust collection systems that feature a centrifugal fan, dirty air intake, patented drop-out box, high efficiency filters, reverse pulse filter cleaning system, dust discharge system, clean air exhaust and fan silencer. All components are mounted on a single mobile base to create 6m3/s to 60m3/s of air flow. Mobility combined with compact design, provides significant cost saving benefits by reducing downtime on construction sites when machines are being relocated. The tracks are hydraulically powered by the T4/5F diesel engine and operated via remote control. (Umbilical control is also provided as a failsafe.)

Grydale hold international patents for manufacturing the only self-propelled (track-mounted) mobile dust scrubber on the market.

Track Mounted. Key Benefits.

Grydale track mounted mobile dust collectors have 6 key benefits:

  1. Units can be easily transported and operational in a very short period, with limited set-up requirements.
  2. The diesel motor powering the fan means there is no requirement for an external power supply, such as a mains connection or auxiliary power units.
  3. Units can be easily moved during operation.
  4. Moving alongside dust generating equipment, such as road headers and machines used for bench excavation and cross passages provides effective dust collection at source.
  5. Units do not require long, expensive ducting to be constructed or installed.
  6. Units offer full mobility and better control with variable speeds between 2–4 km/h to improve the efficiency of operations.
